Carole Cave is owner and Director of the Sooke Dance Studio. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dance (emphasis modern dance & choreography) from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her University degree included courses in Pedagogy. After graduation from University, she taught children's dance at Montessori School in Santa Barbara, CA. In 2006/2007 Carole studied Brain Dance including a comprehensive 6 week workshop "Brain Dance for Choreography" with Annemarie Cabri. She has over 30 years teaching experience with dancers of all ages and abilities. She strives for her dancers to grow and blossom in a positive, creative, non-competitive environment. She is known for her use of creativity and imagination to make dance fun, use of positive reinforcement to encourage confidence while establishing the structure and discipline that children crave. Carole has been providing Sooke with dance and performance opportunities for 25 years.
Kristal Weening started training at age 5 at Stages Performing Arts School and on the teaching staff at Stages for over 15 years. She is formally trained in Jazz, Ballet, Musical Theatre, Tap, Hip Hop, Modern, Flamenco and Acrobatics. She has performed in local productions of Babes in Toyland, The Wizard of Oz, Oliver and Miracle on 34th Street. She has also performed locally in the Commonwealth Games and abroad in China.
Alanna Smith has been sharing her love for dance since the young age of 3, receiving her training in Sooke and Victoria. She began her training in Tap and Jazz and quickly added ballet, Lyrical and Hip Hop to her repertoire. Alanna has completed her Gilbert Tap exams, passing with high distinction. Her teaching experience includes choreographing for numerous dance studios, elementary and high school programs and recreation centres. She has attended conventions and competitions across Canada and the United States and has performed both locally and internationally. Alanna has taken classes at The Edge Performing Arts Center in L.A and also had a lifetime experience of performing in Disneyland. Alanna’s classes are fun, challenging and technical. Alanna loves teaching here in Sooke and hopes to be a positive and influential role model to her students.
Anthea Browne grew up in ballet, earning in a dance degree from Ryerson University. There she discovered contemporary dance, along with becoming a fitness teacher and personal trainer. In Vancouver, she performed mostly with Kokoro Dance, as well as winning an International Aerobics championship. In 1999 she discovered Ashtanga Yoga, embracing this practice for its energy and transformation. She began Stark Raven Dance, a multigenerational company which specialized in site-specific performance. Moving to the Comox Valley, she taught and created works for kids ages 8 - 18 at Valley Dance Centre, and opened Karuna Centre for Dance and Yoga. She spent four years in Montreal, studying dance improvisation. These days Anthea teaches Restorative Yoga, and practices Clearheart Bodywork.
Brandy Baybutt has performed with such companies as Mascall Dance and Kokoro Dance. She has performed at the Vancouver International Dance festival and On the Boards in Seattle. Her work has been shown at The Metro ,The McPherson Theatre, Bounce (Victoria Event Centre and Dance Victoria), Upstairs Dances, and in Vancouver at 12 Minutes Max. She has had the opportunity of working with Lynda Raino, Lori Hamar (Suddenly Dance Theatre), Constance Cooke, Ballet Victoria, and tripod Collective. She was on faculty at the Lynda Raino Dance Studio from 2003 until 2013. Brandy graduated from the School of Toronto Dance Theatre in 2000. She has also taught for the Victoria School of Contemporary Dance as well as Island Dance Studio. She currently runs an Iyengar Yoga studio in Sooke.
Nicole Jean began training at the age of 5 in Northern Ontario. There she trained in the Cecchetti method of Ballet. She has completed exams at the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (B.A.T.D.) in tap and jazz. She has trained in many styles of dance in including ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, and lyrical. She has competed at various dance competitions and workshops in Ontario and the United States. She has three lovely young children. Nicole has her Bachelor’s is Child and Youth Care from the University of Victoria and is completing a Graduate Certificate in Child and Youth Mental Health at Thompson Rivers University.
Taylor Brooks has studied Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical and Ballet at Stages Performing Arts School, where she is also an instructor. She is a graduate of Spectrum Dance Academy under the direction of Lia (Biros) Shannon. She has performed in many Festivals earning awards and accolades. Her passion for dance and teaching inspire her students to flourish.
Stephanie Wilson ARAD RAD RTS, PBT, AIDT Assoc. began her dance training at the age of 3. She has trained in ballet, modern, contemporary, jazz, tap, hip hop, and acro. She has attained her Advanced II level ballet exam in RAD (Royal Academy of Dance), her Advanced level modern exam in AIDT (Association of International Dance Teachers) and her Gold Higher Tap exam in AIDT. Over the years she has been involved with local dance festivals and numerous conventions. The love she holds for dance drives her to share that passion with her students. Stephanie has achieved teaching certifications in AIDT modern/jazz and completed the RAD Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies program. She looks forward to teaching at Sooke Dance Studio and passing on a life-long love of dance.
Maddy McHugh has been dancing at Sooke Dance Studio for 10 years studying tap, hip hop, jazz, lyrical, contemporary and ballet. She has assisted classes for several years and is in her second year teaching classes. She is a member of the Lil City Beatz Hip Hop Crew. She is currently attending the University of Victoria and excited to part of the Sooke Dance Studio Team.
Kayla Harvey studied multiple dance styles at Karen Clark dance studio for 5 years. She has been studying dance at Sooke Dance studio for over 6 years including jazz, lyrical, hip hop, ballet, contemporary, acro and tap. She has been a member of Performance Company and Lil City Beatz Crew for several years. Her dance credits include performing in Victoria and Nanaimo Dance Festivals and Competitions, attended GSP dance convention and receiving her RAD Ballet Solo Performance Award. She has been a part of Pace musical from Grade 2 – 9 and performed in numerous musical theatre shows. She is excited to share her passion for dance with Sooke Dance Studio dancers.
Virginia Stephenson has trained in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Musical Theatre, Hip Hop and Contemporary. She has achieved her Royal Academy of Dance Advanced II Examination with Merit, Gold Higher Tap Examination with Honours, Advanced AIDT Modern Examinations with Honours with Distinction. She is currently working toward her certification to teach AIDT Modern. We welcome Virginia to the Sooke Dance Studio team.
